123 Decathlon – Fundraisers turn to pedal power to promote charity initiative

As part of the launch of the Olympic themed charity event, The 123 Decathlon Challenge, a team of local business people set off on a 17 mile bike ride to visit the charities being supported. The challenge officially kicks off in February 2012 and has already raised £25,000 for Hampshire based charities in its bid to raise £100,000.

The 19 strong team took to their saddles, starting at The Rainbow Centre in Fareham, where they were waved off by three year old, Felix Snell, who suffers from cerebral palsy. Following a thoroughly planned out and picturesque cycle route, the cyclists headed towards Southampton visiting the Wessex Cancer Trust and finally finishing the journey at The Rose Road Association on Aldermoor Road.

Bruce Elkins, one of the founders of the 123 Decathlon Challenge said: “Everyone really enjoyed the bike ride and it was great to see such great support waving us off, especially from Felix who was very eager to join us on his tricycle. Stephen Downham from Hughes Ellard joined the group on his vintage trike for the final cycle into Rose Road.

“The three local charities are very special causes and we are on target to hit our £100,000 target. There are activities for everyone in the 123 Decathlon challenge and we are urging people to sign up now for the badminton event on 21st February 2012 and step up to the challenge.”

The 123 Decathlon Challenge will take place across the year in 2012, running either side of the Olympics with the funds raised to be shared between the three charities. The ten activities that make up the challenge cater for any level of sporting ability and include: badminton, tennis and table tennis tournament; a 5k, 10k or 20k walk, a triathlon, athletics, a 5k run, a track cycle, 100k road cycle and 1500 metre swim.

The first event of the year is Badminton on Tuesday 21st February 2012 with the potential opportunity to challenge a celebrity or international standard player.
